Sunday Reflection

Jesus thanks the Father for revealing the divine mysteries to simple people who accept him while the learned and the wise are blinded towards these mysteries and so reject him. He thanks the Father for the revelation received and for the content of this revelation.

He then invites the overburdened to himself, to take his yoke and learn from him. The image of “yoke” belonged to the relationship between slave and master, and later came to be applied to the disciple-master relationship. The yoke of Jesus has nothing to do with oppression, because he comes with humility and meekness.

His rule of life is not hard and heavy like the rules imposed by the Scribes and the Pharisees. The mysteries of the Kingdom cannot be gained by mere learning, human wisdom or human effort. Self-sufficiency is the great obstacle that prevents one from welcoming the mysteries of God.

The simple people who know their littleness and inability, in their poverty and humility, look for what can fill their human existence.
