Sunday Reflection

The Gospel episode recounts the call of the first disciples of Jesus, in which we get to know the three qualities of a disciple.

1) Peter, an experienced fisherman, fishes all night long but catches nothing. Jesus’ request to put out the nets sounds stupid to Peter but he obeys His word. A disciple needs to be obedient to Jesus’ command, even if it does not make sense to him/her. Obedience always results in divine blessing.

2) Peter can discover himself and have no difficulty in acknowledging his taste of life – “I am a sinful man” – before Jesus. A disciple needs to have true selfawareness of himself/herself and to acknowledge it before Jesus.

3) Without a second thought, as the invitation is extended, they leave everything. They know that following Jesus is much more valuable than all they have so far. A disciple needs to give up all his/her plans and possessions for the sake of following Jesus.
