Brief account on the Apostolate of Divine Mercy

Devotion of SHC – By Henry Liew

Prelude : Obedience to the will of God

One year before 2007, I was praying for God’s guidance to start a new church group in SHC. It happened after my talk in Bahasa Malaysia regarding the role of the Holy Spirit in the church for the Charismatic covenant community in Papar. My wife told me that she noticed few boxes of the Divine Mercy booklets that were partly dampened by the rain at the old presbytery which was partially demolished at that time.

I told my wife that I pitied Jesus who was wet by rain so we took those booklets home and later redistributed them to churches and friends in Sacred Heart Parish and other parishes.

At that time, I did not know about the Divine Mercy. I thought it was another form of rosary prayer, but I started to pray the 3 o’clock prayer and the chaplet of Divine Mercy everyday myself. One day after attending the Sunday mass at CMI, my wife told me that she received an inner voice during the mass to ask me to start the devotion at Sacred Heart Cathedral.

I waited and did not start the devotion immediately because I did not know how to begin. Later my wife and I went to the Daughters of St. Paul‘s bookstore to buy a book entitled ‘The life of St. Faustina’. After reading the book, I found out that there was something inspiring about the messages of our Lord Jesus to St. Faustina. I changed my perception about the Divine Mercy devotion.

My wife was keen to start the devotion, so we decided to rent a small room at the parish centre where we have the first devotion on the 15 September, 2007. On that day, we only have 7 persons to start with; most of them are my family members. We passed the news of the devotion to friends by word of mouth and the following week, our attendance increased to 15.

After 2 months, I went to see Msgr. Primus to seek for his approval. He told me to carry on and the official approval would only come after 1 year. On 19th October, 2008, the first anniversary mass was celebrated by Fr. Johnny Raju at 2.00pm at the cathedral.

Learning from more established groups outside

We visited the Divine Mercy centre in Subang Jaya and the church of the Divine Mercy in Shah Alam to get more information about the devotion. We obtained few books and leaflets from the centre. After that, we made a group pilgrimage to the National shrine of the Divine Mercy in Marilao Bulacan, Philippines. There we met Fr. Mar DJ Arenas who explained to us more about the devotion. He also encouraged us to get a spiritual director, a priest, for our group.

When we returned to Kota Kinabalu, my wife and I went to see Msgr. Primus for a spiritual director. He suggested a deacon as our spiritual director but we are not happy with his suggestion as a deacon would eventually be transferred away after his ordination. On the other hand, my wife had a strong urge to ask Mother Grace Deosing (FSIC) as our spiritual director. She contacted Mother Grace to inform her of our intention. When my wife told Msgr. Primus about this matter, he immediately contacted mother Grace to find out whether she would accept this responsibility. Later Mother Grace was assigned as our spiritual advisor and Msgr. Primus agreed to be the spiritual director.

With great trust to the message of Jesus to St. Faustina in D435, Jesus said ‘Do not fear, I myself will make up for everything that is lacking in you’. Therefore we continued with confidence our devotion every Saturday. After sometimes, the attendance of our devotion increased in numbers and now we have spread our devotions to chapels and churches into the rural areas. God has sent to us committed members for this outreached mission. Our Saturday devotion in the SHC chapel is packed with people and we have also started our Bahasa Malaysia devotion twice a month on Sunday afternoon in the chapel. The Chinese group has the intention to start their devotion soon.

The fruits of Our Divine Mercy Devotion

The need to proclaim God’s mercy is a constantly recurring theme in the Diary of St. Faustina. Jesus wants us to proclaim to the whole world His unfathomable mercy (D 1142). He also said, ‘Do whatever is within your power to spread devotion of my mercy. I will make up for what you lack. Tell aching mankind to snuggle closed to my merciful heart, and I will fill it with peace.
(D 1074).

Ever since, the devotion started in Sacred Heart Cathedral, the Apostolate has helped to start the Divine Mercy devotion in the nearby church such as in St. Aloysius’ church, Limbanak, Penampang, St. Augustine’s church, Kinarut, St. Catherine’s church, Inanam. We have organised seminars and retreats for our devotees with the help of foreign priests and laymen to give more knowledge on the message of the Divine Mercy. Our Apostolate members also visit home and hospital to pray for the sick when there are needs. We are distributing prayer cards on Divine Mercy in English and BM to Catholics / Christians and share the Divine Mercy message to them. Our outreached team has visited more than 70 chapels in the parish of Inanam, Ranau and Bundu Tuhan. We also extended our visits to the church in Sipitang, Beaufort, Membakut, Labuan and Kapayan.

With the visit of Bro. Stanley Villavicencio from Cebu, Philippines to Kota Kinabalu in 2011, we went to Keningau, Tambunan, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Tuaran and Inanam besides SHC to spread the good news of God’s mercy. Besides this, Fr. Vicente Robles and Fr. Egai De Jesus from the National Shrine of Divine Mercy in Marilao, Bulacan, Philippines on invitation by our Apostolate , conducted a two days seminar on Divine Mercy on the 8th and 9th September,2013 . The attendance of this seminar was very good. On 5th April,2014, Our Apostolate has conducted one day seminar in English at SHC parish centre . (Explaining more detail on Divine Mercy message).

The participants were very encouraging and after the seminar, many of them commented that the mercy of God is extremely merciful and this is the message that they have been wanting to hear.

Our outreached teams have done a great job to spread the message of God’s mercy in many chapels that they have visited. The devotees there have been praying the chaplet and the 3 O’clock prayer faithfully every day. On account of this, there are conversions in their lives, many miracles and healings have happened. Due to the novena and Feast of the Divine Mercy, many peoples have come back to church and they have taken the sacraments of confession seriously. They have begun to pray for the souls in purgatory and offer masses for them.

During our devotion in the rural chapels, men, women, youth and children venerate together the Image of the Divine Mercy. Our Apostolate is still making efforts to spread the messages of the Divine Mercy to other places in the rural area.

Mercy towards poor people and children

The driving force of our efforts to spread the messages of Divine Mercy to the rural area is focused on mercy towards the people there. Mercy includes the needs of those poor children in the area. We brought along with us used-clothing, second-hand toys and candy for them. If we stayed over-night there, we brought raw food, fruits and vegetables to cook and have fellowship with them. Jesus in us wants to meet and comfort the poor through His Mercy.

Mercy is for all

Divine mercy is not only for the devotees but for all human beings. All of us sinners need to call upon His mercy, turn to His mercy and receive His mercy. Jesus, the Divine Mercy, is the only way to salvation and God wants no one to escape from that way. Divine Mercy is not a secondary devotion but an integral dimension of Christian faith and prayer. Therefore, this Apostolate calls for unity in the church to practice  personal devotion to the Divine Mercy at home every day. The time will come when all of us will truly need the mercy of God before the second coming. Do not wait, for the call to turn to His mercy is urgent.
