Lord, you are the Word become flesh in order to establish the Kingdom of God in the world by stressing the urgency of conversion to respond to the Kingdom already in our midst. You recruited some disciples to collaborate in your mission of preaching the word. But the casual way you chose them is startling: holding no interview or assessment of their intelligence or talents, you invited two pairs of brothers to follow you.
As you walked along the shore, you just happened to see them and called them. Were they fit for the job? By human reckoning they would not be. Strangely, you gave no thought to it. How qualified they were hardly mattered. Your way of calling them was maybe a test of their suitability. If they were ready to give up everything to follow you at your invitation, they were fit for the job. At your word, they instantly left their boats, nets, and families to follow you and share your mission. You could mould such men as you wanted and make of them what you wanted. The call you gave the first apostles: ‘Follow me’, is addressed to each of us every day of our life. Lord, make us worthy messengers of your Word.
